Leadwork & Metal Roofing

Traditional lead flashing, valleys and bay roofs, plus copper and zinc roofing — the heritage metalwork that keeps West London's period roofs watertight.

Where roofs leak

The metalwork that makes or breaks a roof

Most roof leaks don't come from the tiles themselves — they come from the junctions: where the roof meets a chimney, wall, parapet, valley or bay. That's all lead, and when it's under-sized, badly dressed or simply worn out, water finds a way in.

Leadwork is a traditional craft, and we treat it as one. We dress and size lead correctly to code, form proper valleys and soakers, and renew tired flashings so the vulnerable parts of your roof stop being the weak parts. We also install copper and zinc for bays, dormers and contemporary work.

Leadwork & metal questions

What is lead flashing and when does it need replacing? +
Lead flashing is the weatherproof metalwork that seals the joints where a roof meets a wall, chimney, valley or bay. It's one of the hardest-working parts of any roof. It usually needs replacing when it cracks, splits, lifts, or was under-sized or badly dressed originally — all common causes of leaks in older West London homes.
Why is leadwork so important on period roofs? +
Victorian and Edwardian roofs rely on lead at every vulnerable junction — valleys, chimneys, parapet gutters and bay roofs. Poor or perished leadwork is behind a large share of leaks on period properties. Getting it dressed and sized correctly is the difference between a roof that stays dry and one that keeps leaking.
Do you install copper or zinc roofing? +
Yes. Copper and zinc are durable, attractive metal roofing options often used on bays, dormers, porches and contemporary extensions. Both develop a natural patina over time and last for decades when installed correctly, which is skilled work we're set up to do.
Can you repair leadwork rather than replace it? +
Small splits and cracks can sometimes be repaired, but lead that has failed through age or fatigue is usually best renewed and re-dressed to the correct code and size. We'll advise honestly on whether a repair will hold or whether replacement is the sensible choice.
